Sorokin Wins Bowling Green, Takes Points Lead



Top Fuel 1st Round Eliminator Results from the Holley NHRR in Bowling Green, KY:

There is some confusion about the ladder. Contrary to earlier reports the alternate rule is in effect. Brendan Murry (two-broken blocks) and Tim Cullinan (also a windowed block) can’t make the show. Tyler Hilton and the “Great Expectations III” entry is the only alternate still on the premises and he will replace Murry against Champion

The consensus is that — barring a longshot win from Tyler Hilton — whoever wins this event will be leading in the points.

First pair: Tony Bartone singles to a sizzling 5.69. He will face the winner of the Murphy vs. Williamson standoff.

Next up, the Chevies: Hilton’s “Great Expectations III” BBC vs. Sorokin’s “Champion Speed Shop” SBC… #2 qualifier Sorokin throws down a 5.83 to trailer Hilton’s 8.01.

Jim Young faces Neal & White and misfires a couple of ways, including a red-light start, tire-smoke and oil at the top end. White blithely marches into the next round with a 5.93 at 232 mph.

The last pair has all kinds of points title consequences: Jim Murphy vs. Rick Williamson. This was a serious throwdown of a drag race: They were neck-and-neck until the 1/8th mile when Murphy’s Roland Leong-tuned machine started gathering more steam and got to the finish line at 260 mph (!) and 8/100ths of second before Williamson, whose 5.81 at 247 mph couldn’t quite match Murphy’s 5.74.

Second round pairings: The Low ET car (Bartone) vs. the Top Speed car (Murphy), followed by the #2 points car (Sorokin) vs. a man on a mission, Rick White.



Top Fuel Semi-Final Eliminator Results from the Holley NHRR in Bowling Green, KY:

First pair: Rick White in the SoCal-based Neal & White digger vs. Adam Sorokin in the NorCal-based Champion Speed Shop entry. Chrysler vs. Chevy. Handsome versus… anyway… After stout side-by-side burnouts, Sorokin lays down a ridiculously quick reaction time of .026 seconds and never lets up, even when his machine gets out of the groove at half-track and nearly hits the wall at 1000′ whereupon he stabs it back into the groove just ahead of White who posts a 5.80 at a piston-puffing 235 mph. Sorokin’s ET: 5.79 second. The margin of victory was 9/100ths of second.

Next up: Bartone vs. Murphy. Boggs vs. Leong. In this face-off of fueler legends, Bartone’s mount inexplicably quits a couple of hundred feet into the run, while Murphy makes massive amounts of horsepower and trips the timers in 5.68 seconds and a top-end speed of 245 mph.

Your final round competitors: Jim Murphy vs. Adam Sorokin. It’s going to be intense.

Jim Murphy and the WW2 rail vs. Adam Sorokin and the Champion Speed Shop streamlined fueler.

Both drivers use up a lot of real estate trying to find and re-find the groove. Murphy clicks it as Sorokin plays with the marbles during the last 320 feet of the dragstrip and clocks a victorious 5.76 at 237 mph to Murphy’s valiant but losing 6.37 at 158 mph. This is why real drag racing is 1/4-mile long.
